There was more of an emphasis on extracting fewer teeth, expanding palatal arches, and functionally improving occlusions. It was at this time I began&nbsp;recognizing how this method of orthodontics could possibly improve the airways for children that might be carried over into their adulthood. It improves speech, aids in proper breathing and even prevents headaches, contributing to a person&rsquo;s well-being in ways many might not expect</font><span style="color:rgb(107, 103, 103)">.&nbsp;</span><br /><span style="color:rgb(107, 103, 103)">Breathing issues, like sleep apnea, can sometimes be associated with orthodontic problems. Sleep apnea is a condition that causes people to stop breathing or breathe very shallowly while sleeping.&nbsp;</span><span style="color:rgb(107, 103, 103)">A narrow jaw can sometimes play a part in sleep apnea and its symptoms, such as snoring.</span><span style="color:rgb(107, 103, 103)">&nbsp;</span><span style="color:rgb(107, 103, 103)">"This is a major topic in orthodontics today, as the relationship between breathing and the space available in the mouth has been linked to sleep apnea,&rdquo; Karakousoglou said.</span><br /><span style="color:rgb(107, 103, 103)">She explained that there has been much debate as to the connection between the sleep disorder and orthodontic issues. While she said it&rsquo;s true that a severely misaligned jaw has been linked to the condition, and a combination of orthodontic treatment and surgery can sometimes help, the overall connection is still being studied.</span><br /><font size="3">A narrow upper jaw can limit space for the tongue, potentially blocking airways during sleep. As the business manager, she is involved with all aspects of the practice. Since 2007, she has been intricately involved with dental sleep medicine, developing protocols and strategies for insurance, communication with sleep physicians, and consultations with patients. She has trained with dental sleep physicians around the country and brings both a thorough knowledge of obstructive sleep apnea and understanding of the medical arena. She has spoken across the country with the AADSM and university-based programs. In addition to working at the dental practice, Belinda had worked at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children&rsquo;s Hospital on a part-time basis until her retirement in June 2019 after 31 years.&nbsp;She continues to expand her knowledge in the areas of sleep and medical insurance.<br />&nbsp;<span style="font-weight: 700;">Kevin Postol, DDS&nbsp;</span>received his dental degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and attended the University of Iowa for a General Practice Residency.&nbsp; He has practiced general dentistry since 1992.&nbsp; In 2006, he entered the field of dental sleep medicine and later became a Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine (ABDSM) in 2011.&nbsp; He is past chairman of the AADSM&nbsp;Essentials of Dental Sleep Medicine course and has spoken at numerous local and national meetings.&nbsp;He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the AADSM. Dr. Postol maintains a combination of a general dental practice and dental sleep medicine practice simultaneously in St. Louis, MO.<br />&nbsp;<span style="font-weight: 700;">Arthur Feigenbaum, DMD</span>&nbsp;is a Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine. He works full-time in the field of dental sleep medicine with experience in cardiology offices, sleep labs, sleep physician offices and multi-specialty dental offices. Dr. Feigenbaum serves as Director of Dental Sleep Medicine for Delta Sleep Center of Long Island and ProHEALTH Dental. He currently serves as the Vice-Chair of the AADSM Annual Meeting Committee and Secretary of the Queens County Dental Society.&nbsp;<br />&nbsp;<span style="font-weight: 700;">Gregory Osborne, DDS&nbsp;</span>earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Dental School in 1981, and in 2005 he was appointed as Clinical Faculty Assistant Professor. He has been treating OSA patients with oral appliances for most of his career as a general dentist, but his passion for helping others was ignited when several of his extended family were diagnosed with OSA. He has seen how effective oral appliances can be and how compliance is high even with patients that are intolerant to CPAP therapy. In 2017 he founded Easy Sleep Dentistry, where his practice is limited to the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea, snoring and TMD. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine, Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry International (FADI), and is the Past-President of the Baptist Medical Dental Fellowship, an international healthcare mission organization.<br />&nbsp;<span style="font-weight: 700;">Jonathan A. Parker, DDS</span>&nbsp;is a graduate of the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. He has been caring for patients with snoring and sleep apnea for over 28 years. He is also a co-founder of the Sleep Performance Institute. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine (ABDSM) and the American Board of Orofacial Pain. He is a Past President of the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine. Dr. Parker is an Adjunct Clinical Professor at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine.
